The Journey

So what does this journey look like, and how does it work?

The therapeutic journey is like a two-pronged river, with both streams moving in parallel and eventually rejoining one another downstream. As we work together, we will simultaneously be working to make order in the present while making sense of the past. The past opens up for us windows to understand current struggles, but we will also work on developing new tools to bring stability into your daily life.

If this is all new to you, here are some short posts that explain a little more about the purpose and process of therapy…

Life Coaching – Addictions, Codependency, & Spirituality

My role as a Life Coach is similar to that of a therapist, but with some distinct differences. Therapy gives more emphasis to exploring and making sense of the past, whereas coaching is more focused on who we choose to be and the choices we make in the present moment.

For those seeking to overcome addictions, my role is to coach you through the process of developing your support system and resources, learning to alter dysfunctional habits, and challenging addictive thinking. We’ll identify goals and discuss how to deal with those obstacles that arise as deterrents to achieving your goals. When necessary, I’ll support you in moving beyond setbacks and learning how to set healthy boundaries to avoid those pitfalls in the future.

For those wanting to break out of codependent habits and to cultivate more supportive and intimate relationships, my role is to help you to define what you want and how to move towards that goal. I’ll serve as a mirror and conduit to help you to recognize the habitual choices you tend to make in your relationships and what it might take for you to break out of your patterned roles. We’ll discuss what it means to bring your genuine self into your relationships and how to overcome the fears that compel you to revert back to old habits.

I also offer coaching for individuals who have experienced forms of religious and spiritual abuse and who are looking to cultivate a spirituality apart from the rules, demands, or expectations that were placed on them. This form of abuse is less well-known or recognized, and yet prevalent throughout society; it has even been shown to have similar effects to sexual abuse and war traumas. My role in this relationship is to help you to identify expressions of spirituality that feel genuine to your person and to support you in learning to live that out in your own life.
